Wrapping paper questions

How much wrapping paper do I need for a box?

Go around the box: twice the width plus twice the height, plus about 3 inches to overlap. End to end, the box's length plus its height plus about 3 inches, so each end reaches just past the middle before you fold. A shoe box of 14 × 8 × 5 inches takes a sheet about 29 × 22 inches.

How many gifts does a roll of wrapping paper wrap?

It depends on the boxes. A 40 sq ft roll (30 inches wide, 16 ft long) wraps about eight shirt boxes, or more than thirty small jewelry boxes cut two side by side. Enter your gifts above and the calculator counts the rolls for your list.

How wide is a roll of wrapping paper?

Most rolls are 30 inches wide. The square feet on the label tell you the length: a 30 sq ft roll is 12 ft long, a 70 sq ft roll is 28 ft and a 175 sq ft jumbo roll is 70 ft.

What if my box is wider than the roll?

Tape two strips together along the back, so the seam sits on the bottom of the box, or use a gift bag. The calculator tells you which boxes need two strips.

How much ribbon do I need for a gift?

For ribbon tied around the box both ways, twice the length plus twice the width plus four times the height, and about 20 inches more for the knot and bow. That is our own rule of thumb; a fuller bow takes more.

How much tape will I use?

Our estimate is about 8 inches of tape for an everyday box (one strip on the seam and two on each end) and about 12 inches for a large one. A 3/4-inch roll of clear tape usually holds 1,000 inches.

Do you store what I type in?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing is sent or saved; print the list or copy it before you close the page.
