How to plan Christmas gifts on a budget

A simple system for Christmas gift planning: one list for everyone, a budget per person, tracking what is bought, wrapped and shipped, and dates to work back from.

Most holiday overspending comes from buying without a list: one more thing for one person, a forgotten coworker, a second gift because the first one did not arrive. A single list with a budget per person stops that.

1. List everyone first, before any ideas

Family, friends, teachers, neighbours, coworkers, hosts. Put everyone on one list, then group them. It is much easier to cut or combine at this stage than in a shop.

2. Set a total, then split it

Pick a total you are comfortable with and give each person or group a share. Close family gets more, the office exchange gets its fixed limit, and small thank-yous get a set amount.

3. Track every gift through four steps

  1. Idea: write it down with a rough price.
  2. Bought: record the real price, so the budget stays honest.
  3. Wrapped: so you are not wrapping everything on Christmas Eve.
  4. Delivered or shipped: with a tracking note for anything in the mail.
Carriers publish their holiday shipping cutoffs every year, usually in early-to-mid December. Check them when they come out and work back from them for anyone you are mailing to.

4. Keep the extras in view

Cards, postage, wrapping and stocking fillers add up. Give them their own small budget line so they do not quietly push you over.
