Christmas movie bingo: squares, rules and cards for a whole room

How to run Christmas movie bingo: square ideas, the winning patterns, how many cards to make, a calling plan and what to do when two people shout at once. Try the free card maker.

Christmas movie bingo turns a movie everyone has seen forty times into a game. The cards make people watch for the little things: the dog that steals the scene, the cocoa break, the snowman that finally gets built. The only hard part is the cards. If every guest has the same card, three people win at once and the fun is gone. Here is how to set it up so each person has a different card and a clear way to win.

Square ideas that fit almost any Christmas movie

Pick squares that show up in many movies, so you can change the film without changing the cards. Write at least as many squares as the card needs (24, plus a free space, for a classic 5 by 5 card).

Set it up in four steps

  1. Choose the movie night, gift opening, party or shower the game is for, and write or pick the squares.
  2. Decide the card size: 5 by 5 for a long movie, 4 by 4 or 3 by 3 when you want a quick win.
  3. Make one different card for every guest, up to 100 cards for a big room. A game code rebuilds the same set later.
  4. Print them, or send each guest a link that opens their own card on their phone.

Pick the winning pattern before you start

Say out loud what counts before the movie begins. A line is the classic win and comes quickly. Four corners is a nice middle step. An X takes longer, and a blackout (every square) works as a grand prize for a long movie or a gathering that runs all evening. For a mixed crowd, play a line first, then keep going for a blackout with the winners already celebrated.

Call the game, or let the movie call it

For a movie, nobody has to call anything: guests mark squares as they see them. For a gift opening or a party, one person draws squares at random and reads them out, so the game moves at the speed of the room. Keep a list of what you called, because when someone shouts bingo you check their card against it, not against memory.

When two people shout at once, check both cards. If both are real, split the prize or play one more round. A card number printed on each card makes the check take seconds.

Try the card maker free

The Bingo Table is a web app that makes one-of-a-kind cards in a couple of minutes. The free demo lets you make up to four cards for a Christmas movie game right in your browser, with no account and nothing to install. The full app adds four more games (gift opening, holiday party, bridal shower gifts and New Year’s Eve), your own squares, 5 by 5, 4 by 4 or 3 by 3 cards, up to 100 cards, a caller with a random draw and a checker for a line, four corners, an X or a blackout.
