Ugly sweater party ideas: contest categories, ballots and voting

Ugly sweater party ideas for adults: contest categories and prizes, numbered entry tags, a ballot for every guest, fair voting and tie rules, and games that do not overlap.

An ugly sweater party runs on its contest. Guests arrive in their worst sweaters, and the night has a shape once there are prizes to win and a vote to count. This guide covers the contest in the order you set it up: categories, entry tags, ballots, voting and ties, then the games and food around it.

Choose contest categories (and a prize for each)

Several categories mean more guests can win, which keeps the room friendly. Pick five to eight and give each a small prize. Popular choices:

Number the entries and print entry tags

Give each contestant a number and a tag to pin on their sweater. Voting by number rather than by name keeps ballots short and stops guests voting for their friends by default. Hand the tags out at the door, and record who is entering as they arrive.

Give every guest a ballot

A ballot is a slip with one line per category, where the voter writes an entry number. Print enough for every guest, including those not entering. Set a time when voting closes and announce it, so counting can start and nobody is still deciding when you read results.

Ballot ruleWhy it helps
One ballot per guestKeeps the count honest
No voting for your own entryStops easy wins
One vote per categoryStops a favorite taking every award
A voting close time, announcedStarts the count on schedule

Count the votes and handle ties

For each category, tally the votes for each entry number and find the highest. Decide the tie rule before the party. Common choices are a quick re-vote between the tied entries only, a cheer-off judged by the host, or a shared prize. Having the rule written down means nobody argues on the night. A spreadsheet that tallies ballots by entry and category, and flags a tie, saves counting by hand.

Games and activities that fit around the contest

Give each game an end time and check that two activities do not overlap. A short day-of timeline, counted from your start time, keeps the contest, food and games in order.

Would a ready-made planner save time?

The Ugly Sweater Party Planner puts this guide into a spreadsheet: a guest list for up to 200 guests with RSVPs and plus-ones, entry numbers assigned automatically, eight editable contest categories with a prize for each, printable ballots and entry tags, a ballot count with a winner, runner-up and tie flag for every category, a potluck sign-up, a games schedule with an overlap check and a day-of timeline. The Holiday Party Planner covers the rest of a home party, and the White Elephant Gift Exchange Organizer tracks every steal if you add a gift swap. Each Etsy download includes blank and sample .xlsx workbooks and a PDF quick-start guide, for Excel or Google Sheets. They are planning spreadsheets: they do not send invitations or take live votes.
