A Christmas countdown for kids and adults together

How to run one Christmas countdown for a whole family with different ages: a daily ritual for everyone, a picture hunt for ages 4 to 10, a shared start date and a plan for missed days. Try the free demo.

The hard part of a family Christmas countdown is not the ideas. It is that a six-year-old, a teenager and two tired grown-ups want different things from the same twenty minutes. The easy fix is one shared evening with two parts: something small for everyone, then something just for the kids. Here is how to set it up so nobody feels left out.

Give every age a job in the same twelve days

WhoWhat they do each dayWhy it works
EveryoneOne short family ritual, 10 to 20 minutesThe whole table does the same thing together
Ages 4 to 10A read-aloud story and a picture huntLittle ones get a game, not a lecture
Teens and adultsPick the ritual, read the story aloud, write the memoryOlder kids lead instead of being led

Set it up in four steps

  1. Pick one start date and count twelve days from it. Dec 13 to 24 is a good default that ends on Christmas Eve.
  2. Mark the evenings that are already full and move the longest ritual to the calmest night.
  3. Decide who reads aloud. Let the oldest child take a turn, and let the youngest choose the picture.
  4. Keep one place for the memory of the day: a line on paper or a note in the app. By day twelve you have a keepsake.

Plan for the nights that fall apart

Some evenings will go sideways: a late practice, a sick kid, guests at the door. Pick a quiet version ahead of time, such as a song, a thank-you or a short story with no craft. If a day is missed, do it the next day instead of skipping it. The goal is the moment together, not a perfect streak.

Check supplies for the next three days every third evening. Most rituals use things already in the house, and a no-supplies swap saves a night.

Two apps that run side by side

The Christmas Pair is two web apps for exactly this setup. Twelve Little Joys gives the whole family twelve rituals of 10 to 20 minutes, a small village that lights up a house each day and a memory book you can download. Little Lights gives kids ages 4 to 10 twelve Christmas adventures with Pip: a read-aloud story, a picture hunt in a snowy village and a small real-world mission, with no timer and no score. They share the same twelve days, so you can run both, or one on the nights that call for it.

Both open in a browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install and no account. Each has its own free demo with the first three days or adventures, so you can try the evening with your kids before you decide.
