How to run a Secret Santa that everyone enjoys
Secret Santa rules that work: a fair draw, exclusions for couples and households, a clear price limit, wish lists, and how to run a gift exchange remotely.
A good Secret Santa needs three things: a fair draw, a clear price limit and a deadline. Everything else is fun extras.
The rules to agree before the draw
- Price limit: one number, stated plainly. Say whether shipping counts.
- Exclusions: nobody draws themselves, their partner or someone in their household, and ideally not the person they had last year.
- Wish lists: ask for two or three ideas at different prices, plus anything to avoid.
- Dates: when names are drawn, the last day to ship, and the exchange day.
Making the draw fair
Pulling names from a hat breaks as soon as there are exclusions, because the last person can be left with only themselves or their partner. A better method is to draw the whole circle at once and check it: everyone gives once, everyone receives once, and no pair breaks a rule. If it does, redraw.
Remote and mixed groups
For a group that is not together, add a shipping address and a ship-by date for each person, and keep the organizer's view hidden so the organizer can play too.
